The chilipad sleep system is a refreshing mattress. The Chilipad sleep system is a mattress that connects, through a long, flat tube, to a cube that regulates temperature. To use it, pour water into the bucket (more details about it in a moment) and adjust the temperature from a dial on the cube or a remote control that comes with it. The cube's temperature range is 55 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit (or 13 to 43 degrees Celsius), so you can make it colder or warmer while you sleep.
The cube is where the magic happens, heating and cooling the water (depending on what the user wants when they sleep), before pumping the temperature-controlled water through the tube into the pad, which is filled with smaller silicone tubes. Winter also said that he has recommended the ChiliPad to many professional athletes who sweat a lot, and that he doesn't know about a single one who didn't like it. You can actually make a Chilipad half queen or half king work for you on virtually any mattress, regardless of size. So when Wirecutter's sleep team called for someone to try out the ChiliPad (with the Cube Sleep System), I volunteered Carter.
I already sleep with a white noise machine, so I just turned it off and relied on the buzz of the Chilipad. ChiliSleep, the company that sells the ChiliPad and the Cube system, manufactures another system, the Ooler, which is essentially a ChiliPad with extras, such as an application that allows you to pre-cool the bed. I could go every engineer and talk about the use of energy in watts converted into BTUs in cooling, talk about the BTUs in the heat released by the body, the volume of water that flows through the chilipad, the measured temperature of the water that enters and the water that comes out, etc. It's not huge, but if you already have things like a dehumidifier, fan or heater in your room, adding the Chilipad cube could create a messy look.
After getting everything out of the box, it seems a little intimidating, but Chilipad made the process foolproof by clearly labeling everything and creating parts that stick together so you don't have to worry about water leaking out of the bucket or pad overnight. Some of you may already know this, but keeping your body at a cool temperature can help you fall asleep faster and Chilipad definitely did it for me. That's why the Chilipad comes in a “WE” option for couples, and a “ME” model for those who sleep alone. This device heats a mattress easily, but the real benefit of the Chilipad is its ability to cool a mattress.
Once you have all the supplies you need, place your Chilipad on top of your mattress and continue to make the bed as you normally would. Neurologist Chris Winter, the president of Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine in Virginia and author of two books on how to sleep better, is not financially compensated by ChiliPad but should probably be by the amount of praise he gives him.
